GOBESHONA3: THE CONFERENCE FOR A CLIMATE-RESILIENT BANGLADESH was held on 8-11 January 2017 at Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB). The first 3 days – RESEARCH INTO USE was the main conference, where GOBESHONA3 brought 69 scientific presentations in 24 sessions (plenary and parallel). Total 348 registered participants engaged from mostly Academic Sector (40%), NGOs (31%) and International Organizations (9%) besides on-spot observers and media representatives.
There was a stakeholder engagement event in the first evening inviting all GOBESHONA3 participants which was followed by a dinner. In that event a new book was launched titled “Bangladesh Confronts Climate Change” and the young researchers of Gobeshona2016 were awarded certificates.
Day 4 was the SCIENCE POLICY DIALOGUE focusing at policy level on national adaptation planning, international collaboration and climate change research.
This year GOBESHONA added a 5th day to communicate research to mass people of Bangladesh named Inspiring Resilience, co-hosted by BBC Media Action and ICCCAD.
Prof. Dr. Gregg B. Walker from the Department of Speech Communication of the Oregon State University, USA was the inaugural keynote speaker who was available all through the conference and also worked on the Universities Network on Climate Capacity (UNCC) during his stay.
Prof. Dr. Myles R Allen of Geosystem Science, Environmental Change Institute of the School of Geography and the Environment and Department of Physics, University of Oxford, UK conducted another international keynote session.
There was a popular Youth Photo Story Booth on urban resilience named Photo Voice, where several youth participants displayed photos on urban resilience inviting participants to comment on those photos.
During the conference, we had exclusive media coverage on GOBESHONA3 in the national newspaper Dhaka tribune and social media stories in twitter and facebook; we got valuable feedback and recommendations from national and international participants to improve the climate change knowledge management system and the upcoming Gobeshona 4 conference.
In the concluding session, Dr. Saleemul Huq focused on the commitments for the next year (watch the video) and announced the date for the next conference GOBESHONA 4.
