Community Based Adaptation to Environmental Health Risks in Dhaka’s Slums

My research looks at community based adaptations to environmental health risks in urban slums, melding together urban infrastructure and public health policy. I’m particularly interested in slums in Dhaka because this is where many coastal climate-induced migrants end up, where they must face new environmental health risks such as water logging and sanitation issues that they did not have previously. The idea of a “community” in a transient place like a slum is difficult to define and calls into question the very idea of community based adaptation in Dhaka. By looking at CBA initiatives in slum case studies, I hope to see which networks and policies make it possible, and even effective, in the first place.
